You will notice quickly that I am highly addicted to Pinterest. Having strong believes that all things should be home made drives this personal choice for me. Knowing what goes into a product I am using is very important for me. I have always preferred making items from scratch instead of seeking a highly preserved item full of GMOs! This goes for beauty products as well.
I am proud to say that I don't buy processed foods, the items that I do buy processed are few and things that I'm not scared to buy already made. I also avoid ground meat products like the plague! I have done a lot of research and I simply cannot justify feeding that stuff to people. I wouldn't feed it to my dog, why would I feed it to my family!
With that said, I have begun to make home made skin products and am totally enjoying the experience. So far I have made home made lip balm (which my boyfriend can attest to, tastes amazing!), home made body butters, home made body salves as well as home made facial cleansers and I do think this weekend I will experiment making bath bombs (I think my nephews will love these) as well as home made soap 100% from scratch! No melt and pour!
I will post recipes as well as pictures that I have of some of the items.
Sweet Orange Lip Balm
8 Tablespoons Coconut Oil
3 Tablespoons Beeswax
1.5 Tablespoons Raw Honey
30 drops Sweet Orange essential oil
(if you want color) 1/2 stick of natural lipstick (I like Jane Iredale and Josie Moran)
Place oil, beeswax and honey in a double boiler (or heatproof bowl
resting on top of a small saucepan of simmering water). (As a side note,
I picked up an extra double boiler thrifting that I use just for
beeswax crafts, which really makes cleanup easier.) Heat gently until
everything has melted.
Remove mixture from heat, and add peppermint oil and lipstick. Stir until blended.Which I totally borrowed from here http://hiphome.blogspot.ca/2012/01/all-natural-lip-balm.html.
Homemade Salve sort of like Lush's Ultrabalm
2 tablespoons beeswax
1 tablespoon cocoa butter
4 tablespoons almond oil
2 teaspoons almond oil
*You can add essential oils if you like, I did not.
I melt the beeswax first because this takes the longest to melt, I bring a pot of water to a simmer and put a glass pyrex measuring cup and let the beeswax melt in this. I then add the cocoa butter and once that is melted I take it off the heat and add almond oil, this is the point where you should add your essential oils if you wish to use any. I whipped it with a wire whisk until it started to get stiff and I then added it into a jar, allowed it to cool and began using it, I'm addicted!
You can use this salve on extra dry skin, it's amazing on your tootsies, you can use it on your lips or any dry parts on your body.
This can totally replace Vaseline which is terrible for you anyhow and you should chuck it just for that reason alone. If you are interested in reading more about how bad Vaseline is for you, you can read this article http://www.blisstree.com/2012/01/12/beauty-shopping/vaseline-bad-for-you-petroleum-jelly-alternatives-879/ .
Cleansing Balm
Use unrefined shea butter and cocoa butter.
1/4 cup shea butter
1/4 cup cocoa butter
1/4 cup besswax
2 tbsp almond oil or jojoba (I used almond oil because that is what I already had)
Orange oil extract about 15 drops. You could add lavendar for it's antibacterial properties as well as tea tree oil if you like.
In a pot with simmering water place a glass measuring cup or you can use a double boiler. Melt the beeswax first as this takes the longest to melt. Then add the shea and cocoa butter and allow them to melt together. Once they have all melted together you take the mixture off the heat and this is where you add your almond oil and essential oils. Mix well and then transfer to a container where you will be keeping the product.
To use the product:
I take a quarter sized amount out of the container, (make sure your hands are clean, you don't want to use dirty hands to do this) I mix a bit of warm water and as soon as it sits in your hands for a few seconds your body heat will begin to melt the product, rub it gently all over your face and neck, take special care in your eye area, this stuff cleans the makeup off your face so well you won't even need eye makeup remover! Make sure you have a clean face cloth to rinse your face. Rinse face with warm water. You probably won't even need to use a moisturizer after this. I use this at night because I find it a tad heavy for the daytime under my makeup. You can feel good about using this product as it is all natural!
Baking-Soda Acne Exfoliant
This is great because it isn't too harsh on your skin and leaves it feeling smooth.
1 tablespoon baking soda, enough water to make it into a smooth paste at this point I add lavender essential oil for it's antiviral, anti bacterial, properties it also promotes healing and reduces scarring. I also like to add tea tree oil because it has antibacterial, antifungal and antispetic qualitites, The antiseptic properties can help fight against acne.
I then take the mixture and rub it on my face and let it sit for a minute and then wash it away with warm water and a face cloth.
Sea spray
In recent weeks I have become highly addicted to Lush's Sea Spray, this stuff is amazing!! It makes my natural curls bouncy and gives it so much oomf! Lush's has a wonderful smell but it is a tad costly at $12.95 so I sought out some home made recipes and this is the version I came up with.
1 Cup of water (Warm to dissolve the sea salt)
1 Tbsp of sea salt ( I used more because I find I have oily hair and my hair can handle it, if you have delicate hair use less salt)
3-4 drops of tea tree oil (Again, because I have oilyish hair)
3 drops of essential orange oil
3 drops of essential lavendar oil
1/2 - 1 tsp of coconut oil
1 tsp hair gel.
I simply mix all the ingredients in a glass measuring cup until dissolved, once they are dissolved I then transfer them to a plastic spray bottle I purchased at the Dollar Store, which holds exactly 8 ounces of fluid :D . This version smells great and works great and isn't $12.95!
